A contraction of the words composition and improvisation, “comprovisation” reflects an important aspect of composer Sandeep Bhagwati’s work, which is at the heart of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec’s (SMCQ) 8th Homage Series.
“Comprovisation” proposes a new way of casting the roles of musicians and composer in a collaborative work. Using interactive scores, this approach facilitates exchanges between different musical traditions and practices. Twelve visual artists have taken this idea and translated it into pictorial language to create their own original works. “Their approaches are diverse; artists have examined the process, raised paradoxes, imagined the cohabitation of styles and their integration into the same work, or evoked in images what music has imprinted on their imaginations,” explain exhibition curators Élisabeth Dupond and Julianna Joos.

Description of my project for the exhibition:
During the conversation with Sandeep Bhagwati, I was particularly drawn towards his use of ‘comprovisation’ in his practice. It is a process involving skilled musicians developing a musical performance that is both improvised in its unplanned nature and composed in moments of grouped direction. Following his method in music development, I worked with a colleague equally skilled in painting to both respond to my painting and improvise with his own mark-making onto a shared surface. The painting was developed through exerting and releasing control over the painting’s composition to one another. Often, my colleague would paint elements against the original painting plan. All the while, I would restore elements from the plan and improvise my own marks in response to his spontaneity.
